Michelangelo Buonarotti started his training in Florence Italy 1488. Michelangelo was a Christian and found a lot of his inspiration in the bible.

In 1508 the Pope Julius II hired Michelangelo to decorate the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo spent four years on a building scaffold 22 meters above the floor to create the world’s most famous fresco.

Michelangelo’s fresco The Last Judgment on the wall of the Sistine Chapel and Genesis (The creation story) on the ceiling attract millions of visitors to the Vatican each year. With his interpretation of the Genesis, he established new aesthetic guidelines for future generations of artists. However, it is not only Michelangelo’s unique talent and masterful technique that today amazes us. Considering the age in which he worked, his bold and challenging representations can undoubtedly be considered revolutionary.

The distance between the viewer and the frescos does however limit the opportunity to appreciate the greatness of Michelangelo’s magnificient work at close range. Now these masterpieces have been transferred to large canvases to give the exhibition visitor the opportunity to study the artist’s astonishing technique up close and to gain a unique overview of Michelangelo’s bold and provocative interpretation of these Biblical tales.

Exhibition opens July 4th, continuing until August 15th 2018.
